We hope that you find the course useful, enjoyable, and intellectually stimulating. We have prepared a week’s worth of tutorials, clinical activities, roleplays, interactive tasks, and self-directed opportunities.

Whilst we have prepared some core modules for you to enjoy, we strongly encourage you to pick and choose different learning opportunities to suit your style and interests. If you feel lost, you can always come back to the timetable or speak to us about putting you back on track.

Attendance
We would appreciate if you could attend our core modules at the beginning of the week. These will cover basic neurosciences, clinical skills, and general information you’ll need to navigate yourself throughout the rest of the week. We want to make sure to see you off with a basic package of knowledge and skills you’ll need on the remainder of your journey.

DAY 1
9.00 AM Welcome session, safety & security briefing
9.20 AM Introduction to the course, welcoming address from the lead
9.30 AM Tour of the hospital and relevant facilities, departments
10.00 AM Introduction to clinical skills 1: Taking a history of a neurological presenting complaint.

  • Tutorial on the sections and relevance of history-taking
  • Common neurological presentations and how to assess them
  • Role-playing exercise and feedback

12.15 PM LUNCH BREAK
1.00 PM Introduction to clinical skills 2: Performing a neurological examination

  • Tutorial on the upper and lower limb examination + cranial nerves examination
  • Common neurological presentations and how to asses them
  • Putting it all together: combining a focussed history and examination
  • Gaining confidence in performing a sleek consultation and leaving a lasting impression

DAY 2 ——-
9.00 AM ACUTE NEUROSURGERY

  • Common presentations of injuries to the Emergency Department
  • Role and rules of Major Trauma in Neurosurgery + Severn Major Trauma network
  • Neurological Intensive Care Unit
  • National pathways for Head Injuries
  • Simulation activity

DAY 3 ——
9.00 AM VASCULAR NEUROSURGERY

  • Cerebrovascular disease and prevention
  • Programmes of Prevention of Stroke
  • Assessment and Treatment of Cerebrovascular Accidents
  • Advanced neurosurgery of vascular disease
    (OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES)
    AFTER 4 PM: FIRST LONG CASE (FORMATIVE)
  • This task is formative (mock) only. We will give you a patient to clerk and a hour to do so.
    After that, we’ll give you feedback on your performance
  • We may ask you some questions about management or diagnosis of this particular case

  • Parkinsonian disorders and inflammatory CNS disorders
  • New treatments: stem cells, DBS, biologics
  • Role of research and neurosurgery in treatment of chronic disease of movement,
    peripheral neuropathies, inflammatory CNS disorders and Parkinsonian Disorders
